Set in a narrow valley in the foothills of the Anti-Lebanon Range, Maalula is a beautiful little village in which the houses are pressed up against cliff face, as if clambering on top of each other. Many are painted sandy yellow and slivery blue, lending the place a splash of brightness missing in most of Syria’s concrete-grey villages. (Lonely Planet : Syria : 1999 : p.153)
